Coal mining in the United Kingdom dates back to Roman times and occurred in many different parts of the country. Britain's coalfields are associated with Northumberland and Durham, North and South Wales, Yorkshire, the Scottish Central Belt, Lancashire, Cumbria, the East and West Midlands and Kent.
Child Labour / Collieries of Whitehaven /England's first Undersea mine/Haig Mine Museum /Klondike in Cleator Moor / / Whitehaven's mining professor/ Whitehaven grew from a sleepy fishing village to a busy industrial port largely because the nearby hills had rich coal seams that were so close to the surface they even outcropped on the valley side.
Augur (or Punch) Mining A form of unmanned underground mining offering minimal capital cost and relatively short start up periods. Large augers or remote-controlled mine equipment bore into coal seams from roadways established on the floor of surface exposures.
Mining the Coal. Coal miners use giant machines to remove coal from the ground. They use two methods: surface or underground mining. Many U.S. coal beds are very near the ground's surface, and about two-thirds of coal production comes from surface mines.
Fig. 1, above shows an illustration of a Open Pit Surface Mine. The definition of a open pit mine is "an excavation or cut made at the surface of the ground for the purpose of extracting ore and which is open to the surface for the duration of the mine's life."
5. WHO IS A COAL - MINER ? A Description of the Occupations in and Around the Coal-Mines. T HIS I. W. W. handbook for coal-miners is going to be read with interest by tens of thousands of workers, inside and outside the I. W. W., who have never seen a "tipple," much less been down in a coal-mine.
Auger mining: Auger mining,, method for recovering coal by boring into a coal seam at the base of strata exposed by excavation. Normally one of the lowest-cost techniques of mining, it is limited to horizontal or slightly pitched seams that have been exposed by geologic erosion.
Method used depends greatly on the mineral's location Mining allows for the extraction of minerals from the Earth. There are many materials that can be mined. The location of the mineral and its proximity to the surface typically determines the type of mining that is used.
